Manipulation in its many variations runs as a theme through these video works. The depicted space within the videos (each consists of only one shot, the camera never moves) is somewhat uncanny. The particular cropping of the image in each shot leaves the viewer challenged to determine perspective, scale or place – as a result, the viewer has to re-negotiate the seemingly familiar environment he/she is observing.
Trail shows a continuous stream of people walking on a circular path. The people appear like ants. They seem to be the masters of their environment but their ardent embrace of its boundaries ironically makes them appear to be its prisoners.
Façade shows a play of light and color on the window-covered façade of a building. The flashing of light and color is reminiscent of advertisement screens. Questions about the origins of the play of light arise. Is the image manipulated?
Escalator depicts a continuous stream of people on an up/down escalator. The uncanny angle of the camera makes it difficult to determine the specific perspective within the environment. Below the escalator, the viewer observes a food court. Notions of public versus private space arise, though the viewer is constantly distracted by the ongoing stream of seemingly mindless shoppers.
The videos investigate the influence of mass media on cultural behaviors and collective desire. All three pieces engage in questions around perspective, power and control, importantly including the power, manipulation and control of the artist.
