Kathrin Burmester works in film, video and photography. Born in Flensburg, Germany, she now lives in Los Angeles. She has exhibited and screened work in the United States and abroad since 2000. She earned her MFA at Otis College of Art and Design where she currently teaches. She is represented by Jancar Gallery in Los Angeles.
Burmester's work engages in a continuous questioning of meaning construction. She interrogates the influence of mass media on cultural behaviour and collective desire as well as the relationship between knowledge, subject and power. In her examination of the aesthetics of power structures, she deconstructs and reconfigures relationships between image and sound, between spectator and spectacle.
